The first days of her stay at the cabin passed peacefully and quickly. Torvin and Zora settled into a quiet yet steady routine, their energies being mostly spent on the daily necessities of survival. Zora found it therapeutic, and in a strange fashion, the life she was building reminded her of the one that had been stolen from her. She missed the community she had known, but it felt good to have some sort of stability in her daily schedule.
Though she had been at first suspicious of Torvin after his conversation with the strangers, he had been nothing less than an exemplary companion in the days since. Zora found it increasingly difficult to see him as a threat. Somehow she knew that if he truly held any ill will toward her, he would be incapable of hiding it so well. His compassionate and caring nature seemed too ingrained in who he really was; Zora doubted that he could be acting so astutely.
The tasks they performed were evenly divided, and steeped in a tradition that Zora knew well. Torvin hunted and foraged in the hills and forests, his need for food now doubled with the addition of a second mouth to feed. Zora felt guilty about that at first, but remembered that there was little she could do to help the situation; she lived an active lifestyle, and still wasn't a skinny girl.
Her responsibilities were of a more domestic nature, and this was somewhat by design; they served to keep her always close to the cabin, out of the woods. She had not discussed the conversation that she observed with Torvin, and her assumption was that he was still ignorant of the fact that she had witnessed it. It had been enough to give her pause though, reminding her that there were very real, unseen dangers lurking in the forest. During the midday hours, when Torvin was most often absent, she was especially wary and on edge.
In addition to cleaning, Zora busied herself through the days by helping to gather from the edge of the forests, both firewood and plants of an edible nature. She was careful whenever doing so to always keep the cabin within her sight, as if some invisible boundary line held her caged within.
Errands such as these were welcome to her, as they interceded upon a monotonous daily existence that would have otherwise quickly grown unbearable. While in many respects her life had become similar to the one she had lived before the attack, she still wasn't free to come and go as she pleased. There was precious little to keep her occupied in a place so barren and remote. As time passed, she began to see the future with an ominous import.
It was a calm and sunny morning when it happened. As is so unfairly common, the event came unexpectedly. Torvin had gathered his things as he did every morning, his sword strapped at his side and a bow across his back. He looked almost exactly the same as he had the day that Zora and he had met, and she smiled, enchanted at the sight.
